Shadows of the Empire

Episode XX · Star Wars Reality · SMAUG-derived MUD

A text-only Star Wars galaxy, telnet-only since before broadband was the default. No client, no install, no graphics engine — just a socket, a prompt, and whatever your imagination does with the description text. This build traces an unbroken lineage back to 1998, still patched, still running, still free to play.

Field Note

The login screen doesn't call it a login — it calls it the New Republic Notables Dossier entry system. You're not signing in, you're filing a record. Somehow the game got to "declassified" before this website did.

Access Terminal · Live Uplink

Connect & play

Click through and you're in — a real telnet session to the live server, rendered right here with full ANSI color. Nothing to install. Create a character the first time you connect; there's no separate account system, the character is the account.

Prefer your own client?

The web terminal above is a straight ANSI/VT100 pass-through — no macros, no triggers, no scripting. For serious play, point a real client at the same address:

Star Map

Worlds you can reach

Twelve landable destinations so far, reachable by ship or the Coruscant transit network once you've got your feet under you. Every one below is fully built and live — this isn't a wishlist.

Star Map · Landable Worlds
WorldSystemWhat's there
CoruscantCoruscant SystemThe galactic capital and starting hub — Menari Spaceport, the Jedi Temple district, and an automated turbocar network linking ten stations across the ecumenopolis, from the Palace to the Holographic Zoo of Extinct Animals.
TatooineTatooine SystemTwin suns over Mos Eisley Spaceport, a full street grid of shops, a Dune Sea crossing thick with sand spiders and womp rats, and the Jundland Wastes beyond — home to two krayt dragon lairs. Hidden, if you know where to look: the old Skywalker homestead, and further out, Ben Kenobi's abandoned hut.
Yavin IVYavin SystemA jungle moon reached via the Pluogus/Tocca tour route. The Old Jedi Temple, real jungle to explore around it, and a cave holding a lightsaber relic — plus a wandering Force apparition who is, as far as anyone's found, the only teacher of Force powers in the galaxy.
Endor's MoonEndor StarsystemBakura Transfer Station — an Imperial timber operation, abandoned mid-project: cargo yard, a sabotaged convoy, a half-stripped refinery, and untouched forest hiding an Ewok lookout post.
Nar ShaddaaNal Hutta SystemA six-level vertical undercity stacked from the Landing Tiers down to a Hutt crime lord's den. Each descent is a real chokepoint — kill the guard, take the key, unlock the lift down.
ByssByss SystemAn Imperial Remnant stronghold: a militarized spaceport, a garrison town that opens fire on light-side characters on sight, and dark-side-only housing. A capstone ritual summons a Sanctum Guardian — defeat it, and a Force Ghost takes its place, teaching Choke and Force Lightning.
GamorrGamorr SystemA visible surface culture of warrior clans, sties, and brawling pits — hiding the real seat of power underneath: Gamorr is secretly matriarchal.
HonoghrHonoghr SystemThe poisoned Noghri homeworld, still scarred by an old Imperial bioweapon, kept in line by a "restoration" project that was never meant to finish.
Mon CalamariMon Calamari SystemCoral City — an aquatic world's capital, docked at from three separate landing points around the city.
AdariAdari SystemBaituh City, a hundred-room settlement built out around its landing strip.
KashyyykKashyyyk SystemThe Wookiee homeworld's forest canopy.
ThyferraPolith SystemThe bacta-producing world behind most of the galaxy's medical supply — corporate territory, run by the companies that make it.

Field Report · Recent Builds

What's new in-galaxy

A running log of what's actually changed on the live server — new places to go, things that were quietly broken and now aren't.

New Sector
Yavin System

Yavin IV

The Old Jedi Temple, a stretch of jungle around it — a stream, a sinkhole, half-buried Massassi ruins, a fallen statue — and a lightsaber-relic cave that existed in the world files for years but had no way in. A wandering Force apparition now teaches every Force skill — before this, none of them had a teacher placed anywhere, so nobody could actually learn to use the Force.

Sector Overhaul
Outer Rim

Tatooine

A legendary corusca crystal now drops from the krayt dragon, guarding a real credit hoard in its lair. The Sandtrap cantina finally has its fountain and bartender. The Dune Sea has actual threats in it now, not just an empty desert. Mos Eisley's streetlights work again at night.

Tutorial Pass
Academy

New-player smoothing

Fixed an academy that was flatly unreachable by anyone, garbled NPC dialogue, a diploma and certificate that did nothing when examined, missing dorm-key hints, and a login flow that used to sit on a silent unexplained pause.

Infrastructure
Uptime

24/7, for real

The server now autostarts on boot and restarts itself on a crash, and a proper shutdown actually saves everyone connected first instead of dropping their session like a crash would. Two real crash bugs found and fixed along the way.

Star Wars names, characters, and places belong to Lucasfilm Ltd. This is a hobbyist, non-commercial revival of a MUD with roots back to 1998 — not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Lucasfilm or Disney. Playing is free. This is a personal server under active development: characters and world state can change or reset without notice, so don't build anything you'd be heartbroken to lose.
